Texas 42 Objective
So, what are dominoes 42 games at a glance? To play it you need:
- 4 players divided into 2 teams
- A standard kit of 28 double-six dominoes
“Texas 42 is dominoes in cowboy boots: partnerships, bets and the spirit of the Wild West on the knuckles.”
As this game is quite similar to the card game Bridge, its gameplay has some specific card terms you need to learn. Particularly, the trumps are the set of dominoes with similar pips (for example, if trumps are claimed 2, then all dominoes with 2 pips at any side are trumps). Trumps are the highest value as they win in any case. Besides, you should understand what the suits are. Suits in 42 are packs of dominoes with similar pip numbers at one end. There are 7 suits in the game which are as follows:
- Six suite (dominoes with 6:6, 6:5, 6:4, 6:3, 6:2, 6:1 and 6:0)
- Five suite (5:5, 5:4, 5:3, 5:2, 5:1, 5:0)
- Four suite (4:4, 4:3, 4:2, 4:1 and 4:0)
- Three suite (3:3, 3:2, 3:1 and 3:0)
- Two suite (2:2, 2:1 and 2:0)
- Ace suite (1:1 and 1:0)
- Zero suite (0:0)
The suit declared to be trumps is the most valuable as it wins even the highest score.
Learning the 42 Domino Game Setup
So, let’s start the game. For this, you need to decide on the partnership. 4 players should divide into 2 teams with your partner sitting across you. You can select teams of your choice or by drawing dominoes. Each player then picks a random domino from a shuffled pile and the player with the highest domino is a scorekeeper while the second-highest domino keeper becomes the partner of a scorekeeper. Subsequently, the other two players form the second team.
The setup of the game is taking 28 dominoes, turning them face down and shuffling them to randomize the choice of the game. Each player picks up 7 dominoes (tricks) to form a hand.
You should never show your hand to any other player, even to your partner.
Then the game begins.
How to Play Texas 42: Core Rules and Tips
The first stage in Texas 42 is bidding. Typically, the game set brings a team from 30 to 42 points.
So, it’s your task to guess which winning score will be in your ongoing set. Each player starting left from the scorekeeper makes bids from 30 to 42 points. These bids should be made regarding your hand (pick a tip: if you have a bad hand with more zero, one, or two suits, it is better either to set a lower bid or pass). The next player clockwise can either bid higher (for example, if the previous player’s bid was 30, you can say 31) or pass. Then the turn goes to other players. If everyone passes, then all domino sets should be re-shuffled and players pick up other hands. After everyone makes biddings, the highest one is fixed and the player who made it assigns which suit is trumps.
Then the player who claimed the highest bid plays one domino from his hand. Other players should discard dominoes with a similar number of pips on one side. For example, if the starter plays 0:2, then all other players have to play any domino from the two suites (higher number of pips on the starter’s domino).
If you have no dominoes from this suit, you can either play any trump or any domino to your choice. The player, who plays the domino with the highest number of pips on the other side wins the round and picks all the dominoes to his hand. For example, in a round started with 6:5 if other players discarded 6:0, 6:3, and 6:6, the winner is the player whose domino was 6:6. If a player played trumps, he wins even if trumps have a smaller number of pips. For example, in a round with 0:5 if other players discarded 5:5, 5:3, and 3:0 but threes are trumps, 3:0 bets all other dominoes.
The next round is started by a player who won the previous one. The process repeats until any player discards all his hands or after 7 marks are won.
Some Info About Texas 42 Domino Game Scoring
Texas 42 has quite a complex scoring. Each trick is assigned to be worth 1 point. But dominoes with a total amount of 5 pips (5:0. 4:1. 3:2) are worth 5 points, and dominoes with 10 pips in total are worth 10 points.
At once, each won round brings a team 1 mark. The game finishes when 7 marks are won.
Winning the Game
To win the game, a team has to get more than 7 marks. Then the total of points is calculated. If a team whose player claimed the highest bid at the beginning of the game doesn’t get a similar or higher number of points, their points come to another team. For example, if you bid 40 but as a result of a round you get only 32, then another team gets 40 points. The winner is the team which managed to acquire 250 points in total.
